11 Things I've learnt from my first cruise
Sunday, 5 March 2017
On Tuesday I returned from the trip of a lifetime to Norway. I've always wanted to visit somewhere in Scandinavia and this certainly ticked all the right boxes.
I went with my parents, 3 sisters, my Grandma and Jared on a 16 night Land of the Northern Lights cruise aboard the Marco Polo with Cruise Maritime Voyages. Apart from my Grandma who has been on a few cruises, none of us had ever considered setting foot on board a cruise ship. It seems such an old lady past time and its certainly expensive.
So why did we go? First off we were really excited by the itinerary with 8 ports of call along the West coast of Norway with amazing excursions being offered, and of course the opportunity to glimpse the Northern Lights. Second, the dates fell over my Dad's 50th birthday so it was pretty perfect for us to all be together and celebrate such a big milestone. Finally, it was something different. Like a lot of people on a budget our holidays tend to be about relaxing on a nice hot beach somewhere in Spain so this seemed like a totally new experience.
So first off a couple of reasons why you might not enjoy a cruise:
1. Being at sea is not that exciting on a ship that is adult only and definitely aimed at older people. The couple of days we had at sea were ok because I quite like just reading and watching TV on my laptop but a lot of the onboard activities were definitely planned with an older audience in mind (eg. bridge, knitting, line dancing etc). In fact my youngest sister at 17 was the youngest person to have ever been on board the Marco Polo! So if crafting and card playing are things you enjoy then there certainly is a lot going on, but otherwise think ahead and plan your own things to do
2. Our room was basic because we opted for the cheapest room which meant we had no porthole or window. This was absolutely fine because you get what you pay for and everything was clean, functional and comfortable but it can feel a little claustrophobic.
3. I was quite sea sick on a few occasions (the North Sea is ROUGH) which I was not expecting as I have been on some scary ferry crossings and done some seriously choppy boat work on our uni's research ship but I was not prepared for this. We had swells of 14 feet which isn't that big but it was enough! Crawling to the bathroom on my hands and kneed was definitely a low point. Turns out I'm ok with the ship going side to side but not good with us rising up and dropping down. It feels like you're on a rollercoaster 24 hours a day and there's no way to get away from it. Hats off the crew who carry on performing/cooking/serving drinks like nothing is happening!
However, there are also some excellent reasons to consider going on a cruise:
4. It's very relaxing not having to worry about cooking or organising anything as once you've picked the excursions you wanted its all organised for you. As I am normally tasked with organising everything having someone else work out all the logistics for our group of 8 people was lovely.
5. There's no internet on board so it forces you to actually switch off and relax. I've read more books on board then I have in the past 6 months! Its a slower pace of life and I didn't feel that frantic rush to get stuff done all the time like I do when I'm at home.
6. Our fellow passengers were all very friendly and keen to chat to us, even though we were some of the youngest people on the ship and the crew were all exceptionally helpful and friendly.
7. As we were out at sea with very little light pollution and crew up on the bridge all night they were able to keep a close eye out for any Aurora's developing and make announcements so that you could go out and watch. This was great as you could relax and enjoy drinking in the lounge knowing that if there was something worth seeing outside, they would let you know. Otherwise you could have been sat inside oblivious because its pretty cold outside!
8. Going on holiday with anyone can be stressful and tensions can flare. We're a big family already but with Jared and my Grandma added to the mix we were a pretty large group. Conflict is almost inevitable if people spend enough time together. But being on a ship meant we could spend as much or as little time together as people wanted to. Everyone can choose how to spend their leisure time and how they want to spend their day. As a result we didn't have any arguments which is virtually unheard of for us.
9. Day drinking is absolutely a thing. You don't have to drive anywhere, you don't have to go to work. So if you want a glass of wine, or a predinner cocktail go right ahead. The drinks on board were not as expensive as I had feared (£2.40 for a medium glass of white wine, £3-4 for a really nice cocktail). Although we didn't opt for the all inclusive drinks package we did get a couple of cocktail packages which were good value. After uni I didn't think I'd ever be surrounded by people as keen on drinking all the time!
10. Like all Scandinavian countries Norway is pricey. Like £9 just for a McDonalds kind of pricey. A main meal in a restaurant can easily be £30 per person without any starters, puddings or drinks. Everything seems to be twice the price it is here in the UK so actually as it turned out our cruise was really good value for money and even with excursions worked out to be around £100 per day which is what you could spend just on a hotel. When you consider your bed, food, travel between destinations and all activities (and we did A LOT) are paid for with that money its actually one of the cheapest ways of visiting lots of places within Norway.
11. However, the best thing was waking up everyday, going up for breakfast and we would be somewhere brand new with spectacular scenery to go with it. It really seemed like a massive adventure and it was really exciting to head ashore to somewhere different each day.
Overall I would definitely consider going on another cruise, especially if I wanted to go back to Norway as I do think it was the best way to travel around. Its a particularly excellent way to visit the fjords (as you can sail up them and really appreciate them) and to travel to the far north of the country as its a long way to drive. As a young person if the itinerary grabs you and it works out cheaper than flying and staying in a hotel then absolutely go for it!

Its been a busy week this week what with juggling work and being at uni. My little blog has hit some small milestones this week as I reached my first viewing milestone. I also had someone tweet me with some positive feedback to say they really liked my weekly happiness posts. Now that made me happy!

4. A few weeks ago I popped into my local
Clinique counter to grab my free trial of their new Beyond Perfecting
Foundation. As a massive fan of Clinique I am super keen to try anything new
they bring out. I am very impressed with this foundation. I normally use their
Superbalanced Foundation in Beige Chiffon as it gives a sheer coverage and is
oil free. While I still love my Superbalanced, the advantage of the Beyond
Perfecting is it offers heavier coverage for days when my skin is not looking
so great. Plus you only have to use the tiniest amount so I think my free
sample might last be a really long time.
5. This week my boyfriend and I had a super
cosy night in with PJ’s, the duvet and Dominos two for Tuesday. Literally my
idea of the perfect date which is tragic I know.

So it has been a full week since I handed my dissertation in. It feels like much longer but I think that is mostly because I have been really busy. But more importantly: I've been busy having fun at long last.
It's been quite the action packed weekend and thanks to my new uni timetable I now have Fridays off which makes life even better.
I spent Friday going shopping by myself which is always such a treat. I love taking the time to browse slowly and just generally peruse at my leisure. I also got myself a new bag, some new sunglasses (for generally being fabulous) and a new thermos flask for surviving long days at uni. Naturally I have forgotten the thermos today. Well done Amber.
After I had finished wasting all my student loan I spent the afternoon reading which is something I rarely get time to do at uni as there is always so much going on. My book of choice was The Wrong Knickers by Bryony Gordon and I have actually already read it. Its such a funny book and any girl in her twenties can identity with it.
Friday night was a Disney themed house party being hosted by one of my friends. Yes that's right I did say Disney. My excitement could barely be contained. My girl friends came over for drinks and to get ready (always the best part of the night) and the party was a great laugh. I drank a little bit too much wine and ended up getting a taxi to Jareds. Apparently I was very drunk and being quite annoying but oh well. A girl deserves to get drunk with her friends once in a while.
Saturday was spent recovering with Jared being lovely to me because I was feeling rather fragile while watching loads of films. By mid afternoon (and copious amounts of ibuprofen) I was feeling much better. I spent several hours pampering myself for an amazing date night with Jared. Was really nice to spend some time together.
Sunday mostly consisted of food starting with an all you can eat breakfast and ending with a dominoes order. There goes my eating healthily resolution! Then just snuggling up in my onsie watching Harry Potter before bed. Got another action packed week ahead.

So some of you might remember a few weeks back when I was still in the midst of exam/dissertation hell I wrote a post about all the things I was planning on doing once it was all over?
Well now that it has all been handed in I just thought it would be nice to share the positivity and happiness of all the fun things I've been up to.
In my head, I have called this 'The Happiness Project'. Please nobody laugh at how lame that sounds, I just think its important that we all focus on doing the small things that make us happy. In the rush of everyday life it is so easy to get caught up on all the stuff we need to do and this makes it hard to do the stuff we really WANT to do. So I'd like to share with you guys my busy week so far which I have tried to fill with as many fun things as possible.
In a way, this is the whole theme of my blog, in that I try to celebrate the small everyday joys in life. It can be tough sometimes, and recently things have been tricky for me. This post is about how you have to sometimes be nice to yourself and be proud of your achievements, even if they seem small to others. What is important is learning to respect how you feel and understanding how to make yourself feel happy. So while the things listed below are actually very mundane, for me the time I have spent with people while doing this has made all the difference.
Went on a fantastic date night on Friday to Turtle Bay which has got to be one of my favorite restaurants. This was partly a celebration of me finishing exams (and my dissertation although I had not handed it in) as well as Jared's birthday. A big happy birthday to him <3 I got pretty sloshed on Prosecco before we even got there and then continued with the wine throughout the meal. It was nice to get merry though after so long of having to be boring. The food as ever was divine, and I had pulled jerk pork for a starter followed by Mo Bay Chicken (chicken in creamy sauce) with sweet potato fries. Jared had their goat curry which was also delicious and as always I was getting food envy. The only problem with Turtle Bay is all the food is so good I always want all of it.
On Monday as we all know, I handed in my dissertation and this was the same day as the start of the new semester. My new modules seem to be fun so far which is good. As soon as lectures were finished I headed straight to Boots and treated myself as promised. I bought my new Clinique Sonic Brush as mentioned here and a new Long Last Lipstick in a colour called Rose Shimmer. It's much pinker than the lipsticks I usually wear but I wanted a change. So far I am obsessed with it. I think after all that hard work I deserved it. And I feel better now I've rewarded myself.
I did have a whole day of Netflix planned yesterday but this has had to be postponed due to my boyfriend being called into work at the last moment. Will be doing this at the weekend instead and I am really looking forward to some vegging out. We've made a whole list of movies we want to watch and I can't wait to get stuck in.
Yesterday, instead of watching Netflix I went to the gym and actually enjoyed it. I haven't been in so long it was actually fun. Fingers crossed for me becoming a super fit gym fanatic. It could happen.
After the gym however I undid all my hard work by meeting my flatmate for lunch at Wild Lime where the food as ever was delicious. Plus it was nice to have a catch up as I have hardly seen anyone recently.
I spent the afternoon having a really good sort out of my room and threw away a whole bag of rubbish. There is something so soothing about having stuff back in order and clean isn't there? Had a lovely relaxing bath before heading out on a bar crawl with the rest of the geologists in order to celebrate our freedom.
So there is what I've been up to so far. Can't wait to carry on having fun over the rest of the week!

A massive happy birthday to my flatmate Cordelia! Feel like I'm posting about birthdays a lot but apparently all my friends have theirs close together.
She started her birthday in style with a trip to Sobar which was great fun. Sobar if you could play good music like that all the time I would go every week like I used to. I had to leave earlier than I would have liked as I had a massive load of work and errands to do the following day.
We started the day off with everyone nursing hangovers and blowing out the candles on the delicious carrot cake baked by my flatmate Nicola. Then after a frantic day of scurrying around getting stuff done we went for a lovely trip to the Thai restaurant mangoes.
Despite living just down the road from this little place for over two years I had never managed to actually go, even though many people have recommended it to me. I think I've always been a bit put off by how busy it is (always a good sign with a restaurant) and felt like I would never get a table.
The decor is lovely and I like the cosy intimate feel of the place. It's actually much bigger than I had realised as it has an upstairs and substantial area behind the restaurant you can see from the street.

I have literally the most disgusting amount of work to do. And I've spent the past few days in a semi permanent state of tears about it. Hence why I have only just got back up to date with this blog. Apologies. But to distract myself from that I went out for drinks at probably my favorite venue in Southampton: Turtle Bay.
My friend Immie has her birthday in the Christmas holidays which are nearly here and we went for cocktails at the Caribbean rum bar.
Had such a lovely time and it was so great to chat to everyone. Got the chance to meet a few of Immies rowing friends and they were all so nice.
Plus the cocktails there are incredible. Discovered a new favorite called Passion Rum Punch which was DELICIOUS and probably had about a million calories in it because it was so yummy. But who cares. If you are ever in Southampton you have to go to Turtle Bay, make sure to get something to eat because the food is to die for.
A big Happy Birthday to Immie! Welcome to being 21 and having the time of your life xxx
Wild Lime Birthday Meal
Went out to Wild Lime Bar for my birthday meal. A massive thank you to all my friends who made the effort to attend. we had a lovely evening with yummy food and even tastier cocktails. After the cocktail party the night before it was a great chance to catch up on what went down the night before!
Had myself a fantastic pizza and some scrummy cocktails. The others had really incredibly looking burgers, kebabs and hot dogs.
Everyone had a chance to sample the really great cocktails they do there.
If you ever get the chance to go to Wild Lime I would recommend it. The cocktails are two for one, the food is yummy but reasonably priced and they also have a great breakfast menu which is even better when hungover.
Just a few causal pictures of the evening. Had such a lovely time and so grateful to have such wonderful friends.

| With the birthday girl |
Her extremely generous parents hired out a Youth Hostel for Hannah and her twin Abi's 21st party.
Set off on the train down there and after a bit of a struggle to find a taxi that ended up with Hannahs mum having to come and rescue us, we arrived!

| At the beach |
Her parents cooked us delicious food, provided us with plenty of booze and left us to it. I had such a great time and after a night of heavy drinking and (sweaty) dancing her parents treated us to a hangover curing fry up. I have never been so happy to see bacon. After stuffing ourselves we headed down to the beach for some Geology nerding and to clear our heads before setting off home.
Massive thanks to Hannah and family for such a fabulous weekend. If you ever get the chance, check out Beer, it is the cutest little place.
Enjoy the pictures!

Had a fantastic day yesterday visiting my cousin for her 21st birthday. This is particularly significant for me as we are only 6 weeks apart in age. We had a really lovely day and enjoyed a scrummy meal at The Flying Horse which I would highly recommend. It was well worth getting up early to get the train home, despite missing the bus and having to run the 20min walk to the station with a heavy bag that was moments away from splitting only to arrive and find the train was delayed. This is why having a car is very high on my wishlist because you don't have to rely on shitty public transport.
As I had overslept I literally only had time to shower and my plan of doing all makeup and getting changed on the train went out of the window as instead of catching the little local service from Southampton to Salisbury that nobody ever uses I stupidly decided to get a train that went all the way from Portsmouth to Cardiff and was only THREE coaches long. What is this madness? As a result it was rammed and I didn't dare move or I would have lost my seat next to a man playing his music far too loudly and crunching cheese and onion crisps at whatever ungodly hour I was up enjoying this stress on a Saturday morning. Managed to go from this mess to looking not to bad.
It all turned out ok though, I got ready at lightning speed and we had a fabulous day. A big Happy Birthday to Stephanie! Can't believe you're 21 or that I will soon be too!
